Screen printing is one of the oldest and most fascinating methods of textile design. This printing technique, originally from Asia, has evolved over centuries and remains highly popular today – not only among artists and designers but also with environmentally conscious consumers. In this blog post, we want to explain the basics of traditional screen printing for textiles and highlight the ecological benefits of this technique.

What is screen printing?

Screen printing is a printing process where a design is applied to textile through a fine-mesh fabric (the screen). In this process, the screen is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, which is then exposed. The unexposed areas are washed out, creating a printing form that shows the desired motif. Afterward, ink is applied to the screen and pressed through the open areas onto the textile using a squeegee.

Advantages of traditional screen printing for the environment

1. Durability of products

One of the outstanding features of screen printing is its durability. The colors are permanent and resistant, meaning that the printed textiles retain their quality even after several washes. This reduces the need to frequently replace clothing, thus contributing to waste reduction.

2. Use of environmentally friendly materials

Traditional screen printing offers the possibility of using environmentally friendly inks and materials. Many print shops now use water- or plant-based inks, which contain fewer harmful chemicals than conventional dyes. This minimizes the impact on the environment and the health of consumers.

3. Lower water consumption

Compared to other printing techniques, screen printing generally requires less water. This is particularly important in times of water scarcity and ecological challenges. The economical use of water reduces the ecological footprint.

4. Resource-saving production

Traditional screen printing enables targeted and demand-driven production. Instead of mass-producing large quantities of textiles, smaller editions with individual designs can be created. This leads to less overproduction and thus less waste.
